DARWIN NEED TO KNOW
THINGS TO DO?
Love a thrill? Why not swim with the world's biggest crocodile species, known as saltwater crocodiles, at the Crocosaurus Cove. Don't worry - it is very safe as you will be sheltered by a very strong glass cage. It is an experience of a lifetime. While you are at that, why not try and capture a few images to show your friends and family?
Additionally, Darwin city and its surrounding areas offer an abundance of activities. Try catching the popular sunset market at Mindil Beach (April to October) or stroll around Darwin and catch its beautiful harbour-side views. So many options for everyone and every need.
If you have made your way up to Darwin, it is almost a must for you to visit one of the world heritage sites, Kakadu National Park. Kakadu National Park is a biodiverse nature reserve, home to around 2,000 species of plants and an abundance of wildlife - ranging from saltwater crocodiles to "wallaroos" (yes - it looks like a wallaby crossed with a kangaroo).
Moreover, you can view some of the world's oldest rock paintings dating back to prehistorical times at different sites within the Kakadu national park. Kakadu's rock art documents indigenous creation stories and is significant to Australia's history. So whether you are planning on doing a weekend trip or spending several days on a tour, we can accommodate you with all your needs.
GETTING THERE?
The easiest way to get to Darwin is to fly directly from another major Australian hub. Domestic flights are usually quite reasonable especially if you book in advance. If you have more time you can either get to Darwin using the Greyhound bus travelling north from Alice Springs, via Katherine. Or if you are a true adventurer you might take on an outback road trip from Alice or even from Cairns, if you do decide to drive make sure you research and prepare well as an outback road trip is a big undertaking.
ACCOMMODATION?
As with most major destinations in Australia there are plenty of hostels or hotels to choose from in the city. If you head to Kakadu or Litchfield on an overnight tour accomodation will be included and can vary from camping out in the wild to glamping (posh camping) to cabins and even hotels, as always it depends on how much you want to pay for your level of comfort!
OUR TOP TIPS?
To enjoy Darwin at its best, you will have to look at Darwin's seasonal calendar. Avoiding wet season is recommended to have the most comfortable trip. Dry season sits between May to October so when planning your trip, it is best to consider fitting the Northern Territory between these months.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Darwin's weather is hot and hotter. It is what many perceive Australia's weather to be like. Make sure you wear your sunscreen every time you go outdoor and try to stay hydrated as much as possible. Another thing to bear in mind is that Darwin has got a high population of saltwater crocodiles. Going for a swim at the beach is usually not an option, however, if it is a hot day and you are planning on going for a swim, then make sure to pay Darwin Wave Pool a visit.
