FUN. FREEDOM. ADVENTURE
Queensland's famous Gold Coast, located south of Brisbane and north of Byron Bay, is a world renowned holiday destination for domestic and international tourists. There is around 57kms of beach, the most famous stretch being next to the city of Surfers Paradise which is the beating heart of Gold Coast. Apart from lazing on the golden beaches there is a plethora of watersports, adrenaline activities and of course the surfing is among the best in Australia. Surfers Paradise is also known for it's nightlife, with countless night spots including bars, clubs, restaurants and a casino to keep you busy.
If you don't fancy the beach during the day why not hit up one of the major theme parks located here, Dreamworld and Warner Brother's Movie World are the two theme parks or if water parks are more your thing you have Wet 'n' Wild or White Water World. Nearby Springbrook and Lamington national parks provide everything a nature lover needs including fantastic viewpoints, hikes and rainforest.
THINGS TO DO?
Why not stay in Surfers Paradise and try one of the many water based activities like surfing, jet boat riding or SUP (Stand Up Paddle boarding). Lazing on the beach by day and partying by night is pretty popular here. The weather is pretty decent year round but can get a bit nippy in winter so if you happen to be in Gold Coast at that time of year head into one of the nearby national parks instead.
A great activity no matter the time of year is visiting one, or all, of the nearby theme parks or water parks. There are also other attractions like Seaworld, a huge marine mammal park. Our top picks for the theme parks are WB Movie World and Wet n Wild.
GETTING THERE?
Located just south of Brisbane it is on all major hop on/off bus routes heading either way on the coast. There is an airport in Gold Coast as well if you need to save some time getting here, or are just coming for a short break.
ACCOMMODATION?
Accommodation is not usually a problem here, there are a huge number of places to stay that will suit any budget. If you are not basing yourself in Surfers Paradise there will be slightly less choice but still not an issue. Finding a nearby campsite, if you are driving, can sometimes be a bit tricky especially in Australian holiday seasons. If you head further in to the national parks you will be fine.
OUR TOP TIPS?
If you want to go to the local theme parks try do so on a weekday to beat the big queues that can form on a weekend, although if it is holiday season it will be busy every day. Also if you plan to go to at least 2 of Movie World, Seaworld and Wet n Wild then purchase a 3 day pass that gets you entry into all of them, it will save you some $$.
ANYTHING ELSE?
While Gold Coast/Surfers can be a great holiday destination, because it is so popular with Australian tourists it can be one of the pricier places on the coast so choose your accomodation wisely if you are on a budget.
Avoid heading to Surfers Paradise when it is 'Schoolies' week, usually around the end of November or early December, it will be packed out with high school graduates partying after they finish their final exams.
