FUN. FREEDOM. ADVENTURE
Cairns is usually the starting or end point of your East Coast journey. There is so much to do - Reef - Rainforest - Waterfalls - Skydive - Bungy jump (the only one is Oz!). If you like diving, or would like to learn this is one of the best destinations in the world to do so on the Great Barrier Reef. The Daintree is one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Then there is the nearby Atherton Tablelands, aboriginal culture and of course the crocs!
The town itself is quiet by day but really comes to life in the evening. There are plenty of restaurants and nightspots to choose from for all types of travellers. Many people choose to chill out by the lagoon in the day or even head out to one of the nearby islands on the inner reef.
THINGS TO DO?
The main access point to the Great Barrier Reef, either a day trip or even a live aboard dive trip if that's your thing. There are some easily accessible chill islands on the reef too. The waterfalls in the nearby Atherton Tablelands are a good day out. For the more adventurous we have skydiving, bungy jumping and white water rafting.
GETTING THERE?
Greyhound and Premier bus both start/end their journey in Cairns. If you are flying in it's a short transfer to the airport.
ACCOMMODATION?
Loads of hostels and hotels to choose from in Cairns to suit all budgets. Gilligan's and Nomads are two of the more popular hostels. Plenty of nearby camping options if you have a campervan.
OUR TOP TIPS?
Best time to be there is in the southern winter (June-Sept), it isn't too hot, but it stays dry!
Do not miss the reef here. You may see the reef further down the coast but some of the best and most accessible parts of the reef are close to Cairns
ANYTHING ELSE?
Cairns is in the north of Australia so it is tropical, only two seasons here; wet and dry. The wet season which runs from November - March (approx.) can be very quiet in Cairns, tailor your calendar accordingly!
Hire your Campervan after all your activities in Cairns and you are ready to move on, you don't really need it while staying in Cairns, it's pretty small!
