Melbourne is the second biggest city in Australia and the capital of Victoria, home to some 5 million people. Melbourne is fun, lively and definitely a paradise for those who are foodies. Melbourne is known to have one of the best café cultures in the world and world class food scenes. Melbourne city has one of the best public transport systems in Australia with trams running frequently, taking you nearly everywhere around the city.
Outside of Melbourne city, not far away, you can see beautiful nature including Philip Island, the Mornington Peninsula and of course the iconic Great Ocean Road. If you are interested in visiting these sites, there are several tours you can take from Melbourne.
Melbourne is known for many things. For instance, it is known as the sporting capital of Australia, hosting many major international sporting events such as the Australian Open, F1, MotoGP and is home to the massive MCG which hosts the boxing day cricket test each year.

THINGS TO DO?
In the city itself explore the many small laneways and take in the atmosphere sipping a coffee. Ride one of the city trams or stroll along the banks of the Yarra river to the Sports and Entertainment Precinct to see the MCG or Rod Laver Arena.
Around Melbourne you can take a tour of the world famous wine region in the Yarra Valley, meet little penguins on Phillip Island, or see the amazing scenery of the Mornington Peninsula. By far the most popular thing to do near Melbourne is to take a trip along the Great Ocean Road, it really is unmissable.
GETTING THERE?
If you are coming south from Sydney/Canberra then there is an overnight Greyhound bus. Many people decide to fly directly to Melbourne instead. As with most big cities parking can be tricky, especially in busy periods.
ACCOMMODATION?
Melbourne is a huge city so has all the choice of accommodation, whether that be hostel, hotel, Airbnb and more. Be aware if you have a campervan it is illegal to sleep on a random street. You will have to head out of the city a bit to find a proper campsite.

This part of the country really is ideal for a road trip, you can easily spend a few days around Melbourne before heading along the Great Ocean Road and into the Grampians National Park before finishing in Adelaide.
