FUN. FREEDOM. ADVENTURE
Brissie, as it is affectionately known, is the capital of Queensland. It is situated just north of Gold Coast and south of Sunshine Coast. The Brisbane river flows right through the city and it's here on South Bank where you will find a plethora of things to do, whether it is chilling by the lagoon, visiting one of the many galleries or museums, riding the Brisbane wheel, strolling through park lands or climbing the iconic Story Bridge.
If you prefer a bit of nightlife, then Fortitude Valley just Northeast of the CBD is the place to go with lots of bars and nightclubs. Not too far away you have the theme and water parks of Surfers Paradise, Australia Zoo or the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary plus Moreton Island where you can dive among old shipwrecks!
BRISBANE NEED TO KNOW
THINGS TO DO?
In the city itself it is mainly all the things around South Bank, unless you fancy the XXXX brewery tour. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is 100% worth the day out, and you can even hold one of the furry bears. If you prefer more action then hit up the Gold Coast theme parks to the south or Moreton Island slightly to the north for sand dunes, whale watching (seasonal) and shipwreck diving.
GETTING THERE?
Greyhound and Premier bus both stop in the centre of Brisbane, at Roma St station. Brissie is also a start/end point for many bus passes, check out your options here.
If you have your own vehicle check in advance it isn't a public holiday because parking can be tricky at busy times.
ACCOMMODATION?
As with most cities there is plenty of accommodation to choose from that suits your budget. Unlike other cities Brisbane doesn't tend to book out unless there is some special event on.
If you are camping there isn't really anywhere in the city to do so, but there are plenty of sites nearby in the outer suburbs.
OUR TOP TIPS?
If you want to head to Sunshine or Gold Coast from Brisbane then try to do so during the week. Many locals have the same idea at the weekend so traffic and parking can be busy. Same goes for if you want to visit nearby Australia Zoo. It's always quieter during the week, unless it is a school holiday of course!
Buying a Greyhound bus pass from Brisbane to Cairns (or back) actually includes free travel from Byron Bay so use that to your advantage to save some money.
Holding a Koala is legal in QLD (unlike NSW), so save your Koala trip money for here!
ANYTHING ELSE?
Brisbane has less of a reputation than the other cities as a place to visit, but do not underestimate the city, it really is an awesome place with plenty to do. If you are thinking of settling down for a while and maybe finding a job then there are worse places than here.
