FUN. FREEDOM. ADVENTURE
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, home to the world famous Barossa Valley wine region and the access point to places like Kangaroo Island, Grampians National Park and not so far away is Port Lincoln where you can go cage diving with Great White Sharks! You will also be pleasantly surprised at the amount of beaches nearby.
The city itself is a cosmopolitan place with some of the friendliest locals around. There is such a wide variety of food to choose from as well as plenty of small cafes and pubs. A big plus in Adelaide is it isn't quite as expensive as some of the other capital cities, plus parking isn't usually a hassle. If you have time make sure to check out a couple of the famous museums and galleries that are here.
THINGS TO DO?
You really can't visit Adelaide without a having a day trip out to the Barossa Valley, sample some of the best wines in the world and take in some beautiful scenery while you are there. Kangaroo Island is home to Kangaroos (obviously!), sea lions, the remarkable rocks and gorgeous beaches and bays. Not so far away is the Grampians National Park with some of the best hiking trails and viewpoints that the country has to offer. If you fancy something a bit more extreme you can head to Port Lincoln and get up close and personal with some great white sharks, rather you than me!
GETTING THERE?
Adelaide is a tricky one as it is quite isolated, you can get there by Greyhound bus or train if coming from Alice Springs. You could finish a one-way Great Ocean Road tour from Melbourne here which is a popular option. Most people fly directly and then explore. Even driving takes a long time, but saying that there are some epic road trips to be had that start or finish here.
ACCOMMODATION?
Loads of hostels and hotels to choose from in Adelaide itself. Camping isn't really possible in the city but unlike other capital cities you don't have to head that far out to find somewhere to stay.
If you are heading to Kangaroo Island make sure you book the ferry and accommodation in advance as it can be very popular in holiday season, it's a great place to head over to with your camper and really take your time exploring the island.
OUR TOP TIPS?
It can be boiling in summer, we are talking prolonged heatwaves of 40°C+. We recommend visiting in Spring or Autumn when it is much cooler.
If you are going to Kangaroo Island, take at least 2-3 days as it is huge and has plenty to see.
ANYTHING ELSE?
Don't forget South Australia has a 30 minute time difference to the Eastern states, set your watch. Also if you are driving in check the rules about moving fresh produce over the border - yes they do check, and yes you can get fined!
